Named as one of the Newcastle major players, Hay & Kilner is delighted with their recent successes in The Legal 500 2016 listings which saw them recommended in 18 practice areas, a clear sign of the quality and breadth of service offered to their loyal client base. Three of their lawyers are also listed in The Legal 500 elite ‘Leading Individuals’ list.

The full service Newcastle based firm is regarded in the highest terms for its work in a large number of fields, including corporate, commercial property, employment, dispute resolution, property litigation, private client, agricultural law and clinical negligence.

Jonathan Waters, Hay & Kilners managing partner, commented:

“The Legal 500 results are once again very pleasing, reinforcing our standing as one of the leading full service law firms in the North East. To be recognised for our work in 18 different practice areas is a great achievement and we are delighted to have three of our lawyers listed as leading individuals.”

In the corporate arena, Hay & Kilner is highlighted for providing first-rate advice that is thorough, comprehensive and delivered in terms a layman can understand. Jonathan Waters receives praise for his combination of deep knowledge with a balanced approach and team Partner Mark Adams is recommended too.

The commercial property team at Hay & Kilner continues to excel representing clients throughout England and Wales. Nicola Tiffen leads the team, which includes leading individual, Richard Freeman-Wallace, who is invaluable in lease acquisition issues, and the highly regarded Paul Taylor. Clients commend the exceptional service provided by the team, which goes the extra mile.

Hay & Kilner’s employment team performed well throughout the year and saw an increase in the number of clients they provide training to through their dedicated, bespoke training service. Partners Neil Dwyer and Sarah Furness are both recommended.

The Legal 500 has highlighted the expertise of Hay & Kilner’s disputes practice for its ‘highly capable, hard-headed, yet friendly’ approach. Leading individual, Martin Soloman and the well-regarded Lucy Gray receive praise, ‘They’re both low on drama and high on results; they are masterful co-ordinators of a professional team, and great at communicating effectively with clients’. The team is also praised for its specialism in complex contentious trusts and probate matters.

Hay & Kilner’s private capital team offers unrivalled expertise in Wills, estate planning, trusts and probate and court of protection work. The firm’s reputation for this type of work has always been strong and Hay & Kilner is well recognised by other professionals for its expertise in this area. Leading individual, Alison Hall is recommended. Hay & Kilner’s family department, led by partner Nicola Matthews is also praised.

In rural matters, department head Alison Hall is again hailed as a key figure advising on farm successions and assisting with drafting farming partnership agreements. Richard Freeman-Wallace advises on farm business tenancies and conditional contracts, as well as negotiating options for the disposal or acquisition of land for residential development.

In the clinical negligence field, Hay & Kilner is again positioned as a top tier firm by The Legal 500. Clare Thompson is singled out for her ‘intelligent and practical approach to cases’. Other key figures include the ‘friendly and compassionate’ Helen Morland and practice head David Bradshaw.

Earlier this year, Hay & Kilner appointed Jonathan Waters as Managing Partner in a rebranding of the firm’s Senior Partner role, taking over from Martin Soloman who stepped down after 15 years at the helm. The firm also made a host of appointments throughout the year including that of Fran Rutherford who joined Hay & Kilner as Head of Finance. Fran is centrally involved in the strategy and direction of the firm.

Hay & Kilner is one of the region’s leading law firms, offering a full range of legal services to businesses and individuals. The firm looks forward to its continued success and growth.
