Leading North East law firm Hay & Kilner has seen its commercial property department go from strength to strength over the last 2 years with a partner led team committed to providing the highest levels of service and technical ability to their growing portfolio of regional and national clients.
The range and number of transactions the team has dealt with remains extensive. Over the last 2 years, the leading property team has carried out over 500 transactions the length and breadth of England and Wales, securing their position as one of the leading providers of commercial property advice in the North East. This is a view supported by independently researched guide to the UK legal profession, the Legal 500: “Hay & Kilner provide a service that ‘has always been second to none‘; the partners have in-depth knowledge and are supported by an excellent team.”
Hay & Kilner’s commercial property division has an extensive commercial client base including prominent, local and national players in the property market. The team draws upon expertise from across the firm to provide a fully integrated service to their clients when other issues arise such as property litigation and construction issues. The recent appointment of Jan Rzedzian, as a solicitor in the firm’s construction department has enhanced the property team’s offering in that area.
The team represents clients in landmark deals involving heavyweight organisations such as national house builders and leading names in the care home sector. Other areas of expertise for the Hay & Kilner team cover rural, leisure, retail & wholesale, commercial development & investment, professional practices & their pension funds and charities.
Partner Paul Taylor who provides a ‘ten out of ten service’ has considerable expertise in all areas of property law. He acts for many longstanding clients including restaurant operators and property investors.
The ‘efficient and diligent’ Nicola Tiffen receives instructions on significant sales, purchases and refinances from a number of clients and acts for various multi-unit operators regularly providing advice to them on freehold acquisitions, lease renewals, the grants of underleases and development agreements for the acquisition of new premises. Nicola recently acted on a prominent development site in Durham for a Hotel, restaurant and Leisure Complex.
2013 was an active year for Hay & Kilner’s property team, particularly in the care and leisure sectors representing many such clients including a well know restaurant chain, a long established North East based Care Home Group and a Hotel & Leisure operator. Deals in the care and leisure sectors in 2013 collectively amounted to many millions of pounds.
Leading property lawyer, Richard Freeman-Wallace continues to conclude transactions for house builders, property investors and developers. He acted for a Manchester based property developer in negotiating the documents for the substantial refurbishment, extension and letting of a hotel in Llandudno, providing a modern 82 bed hotel with complimentary retail and restaurant facilities. The negotiations and documentation needed to be completed quickly and prior to the end of the tax year to take advantage of available tax reliefs. This necessitated working throughout the Easter weekend and a final 36 hour day. He is currently working on the development of a site in Blackpool for a national chain of hotels.
Richard Freeman-Wallace commented:
“We are very proud of our team’s achievements. We value the relationships we have built up with our clients from a wide spectrum of industries such as the care home and leisure sectors where we have had a significant presence for many years. Our tailored and personal service for each client, whatever their size, has helped us to win new clients and to retain our many loyal clients over the years. ”
The team is well respected within the professional community and a substantial proportion of new instructions are referred from other professional firms of advisers such as surveyors, bankers and accountants. The Hay & Kilner property team hold regular topical seminars to which existing and potential clients and other business contacts are invited. Two seminars in the pipeline for this autumn include “How to deal with problem tenants and squatters” and “How to get the best value out of your property development”.
