Hay & Kilner helps Howarth Litchfield build on 40 years’ experience with new premises investment

14 Mar 2019

Advice from our Commercial Property team has helped award-winning architectural practice, Howarth Litchfield, mark its 40th year in business by moving into new offices.

After spending the last 30 years based on Old Elvet in Durham City Centre, the firm has maintained its commitment to the city by investing in new two-storey premises at Belmont Business Park.

The move has been prompted by Howarth Litchfield’s ongoing success. With a number of new contracts being won recently in the North East of England and further afield. Furthermore, for the continuing high demand for its wide range of architectural, planning and interior design services.

Key recent milestones include:

  • securing a place on five framework agreements;
  • gaining planning consent for the significant refurbishment of Newcastle’s Grade II* listed Neville Hall;
  • the historic home of The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers; and
  • the finishing touches put to the National Centre for Healthcare Photonics. The latest innovative building to grace the NETPark development in County Durham.

Nicola Tiffen, Partner in our Commercial Property team, advised the practice’s directors on the legal property aspects of the move.

Jonathan Yates, Managing Director at Howarth Litchfield, said: “Our roots are firmly in Durham, so when the opportunity came to purchase a building that would give us a blank canvas, more space and plenty of parking we jumped at the chance.

“A lot of thought has gone into rethinking the internal layout of the building. To create a relaxed and stylish studio space, where our talented team of designers can work in an open plan setting, and better share their creativity, innovative designs for buildings, and stunning interiors for both commercial and private clients.

“Moving out of old cellular offices has given us the extra space we needed as we continue with our growth plans, as well as being a key factor in our ongoing work-winning and recruitment drive.  Since moving in, we’ve received great feedback on the new office from both staff and clients alike.”

Neil Turner, Director at Howarth Litchfield, added: “Hay & Kilner were recommended to us by our letting agent and provided a swift, calm and highly intelligent service right through the project.

“We pride ourselves on being experts in our field, delivering the very highest quality of service, and the work that Nicola and her team did for us very much lived up to this ethos.”

Nicola Tiffen said: “Howarth Litchfield has an enviable reputation within its sector, and the calibre of the projects on which the team is working is a clear reflection of the expertise that they provide.

“We’re very pleased to have worked with the management team on this latest stage of the firm’s development and look forward to seeing it continue to go from strength to strength in its new home.”
