No one could have predicted the way the world has changed in 2020 due to Covid-19.
For farmers, the pandemic has created unique challenges across the sector and compounded the problems caused by the triumvirate of climate challenges, labour shortages and market conditions.
From a blistering Spring and a wet harvest, to lockdown preventing access to seasonal workers and markets generally, 2020 has made farming a difficult industry for many in the sector.
Yet our local farm shops and beautiful countryside have been a lifeline and an oasis for many during the toughest days of lockdown. The world seems smaller due to Covid-19, but for many it has been opened up by the opportunities and wonder on our doorstep. Now restrictions have eased, farm cottages, camping and glamping for staycations have welcomed many new and familiar faces to rural Britain which has, for many, often been overlooked.
Aside from the challenges caused by Covid-19, unprecedented change is coming for the farming sector as we continue through Brexit and come out of the Common Agricultural Policy, with subsidies being withdrawn to be replaced with new schemes of support.
Now more than ever is the time to Back British Farming and support local farmers and rural businesses.
So on Back British Farming Day 2020 (9th September), everyone at Hay & Kilner gives a special thank you to all those in farming and rural businesses who create and sustain our beautiful countryside landscapes and work tirelessly to put food on our tables.
Our Rural Team work closely with many farmers and rural business and are committed to continuing to support those working in the sector and help them achieve success. Please always feel free to get in touch for an initial chat if you ever need any help or advice from our team of leading experts.
