Coronavirus: New regulations for Statutory Sick Pay

16 Mar 2020

New regulations providing for those who self-isolate to receive statutory sick pay (SSP) were brought into force on Friday 13 March 2020. For SSP purposes ‘persons deemed incapable of work’ now includes a person who is isolating ‘in such a manner as to prevent infection or contamination with coronavirus disease, in accordance with guidance published by Public Health England, NHS National Services Scotland or Public Health Wales and effective on 12th March 2020’ and who by reason of that isolation is unable to work.

As at today’s date, SSP is not payable for the first 3 qualifying days in any period of incapacity, however the Government has announced that it will bring forward emergency legislation to provide that SSP will be available from the first day of absence.
