Hay & Kilner announces new Managing Partner and other leadership changes

17 Aug 2016

Leading full service law firm, Hay & Kilner, has appointed Jonathan Waters as its Managing Partner in a rebranding of the firm’s Senior Partner role. He takes over from Martin Soloman who has stepped down after 15 years at the helm.

Martin Soloman will continue in a client-focussed role in his main commercial specialisms of dispute resolution and intellectual property. During Martin’s time as Senior Partner, the firm experienced steady growth, employing outstanding legal talent, both at senior and trainee level. Now with 26 partners and more than 55 lawyers, Hay & Kilner has a distinctive presence in the market, with a strong reputation among clients and other professionals for its quality, partner led client service.

Martin Soloman commented:

“I am very proud to have led Hay & Kilner through so many exciting developments to help make it the successful and respected law firm it is today. I have had invaluable support from many superb colleagues, one of whom is Jonathan.

Jonathan will be an exceptional Managing Partner and has exactly the right approach and experience to help the firm achieve yet more success in the future. We have worked well together on many management and strategic issues over the last few years. I wish him well in dealing with all the challenges which will face the legal profession in the years ahead.

I very much look forward to seeing Hay & Kilner go from strength to strength, which I know it will.”

A Corporate Partner, Jonathan Waters has been with Hay & Kilner for almost 18 years. Jonathan will continue his client work as well as taking on responsibility for building the momentum achieved under Martin’s leadership and driving the firm forward.

Jonathan Waters commented:

“It is an honour to take on the role of Managing Partner at Hay & Kilner. I’m looking forward to continuing Martin’s fantastic work and increasing our market share. Our core business is in the North East and we aim to continue to build upon our long-term relationships with companies and individuals in the region, with a view to strengthening our position as a leading full service law firm.”

In addition to appointing Jonathan Waters as Managing Partner, Hay & Kilner has also announced other new leadership appointments. Sarah Hall, Partner and employment law specialist, will take on the role of Head of the firm’s Commercial division. Sarah’s appointment comes at a time of growth for the firm’s Commercial work areas as they look to expand their corporate and commercial property teams.

Fran Rutherford has recently joined Hay & Kilner as Head of Finance. Fran is a Chartered Accountant having trained and worked at one of the ‘big four’ accounting firms. She is centrally involved in the strategy and direction of the firm.

Unfortunately, Hay & Kilner will be saying farewell to Partner, Kirstin Cook, one of the foremost private client lawyers in the region. After 12 years of leading the dedicated private capital team at Hay & Kilner, Kirstin is stepping down from her position to relocate to be near family in the South West later this year. Highly regarded Partner, Alison Hall, will become Head of Private Capital at Hay & Kilner with effect from 1st November 2016.

Jonathan Waters, Managing Partner at Hay & Kilner commented:

“Kirstin has been an outstanding Partner at Hay & Kilner and she will be greatly missed as a much respected colleague and friend. But with the wealth of expertise at Hay & Kilner, I know her clients are in excellent hands with Alison and the rest of our strong private capital team.”

The firm looks forward to its continued success and growth with Jonathan Waters as its Managing Partner.
