Hay & Kilner gives and gains

28 May 2012

Employees from a leading Newcastle law firm swapped legislation for painting and advocacy for gardening when they took part in the national volunteering event, Give & Gain Day.

The eight-strong team from Hay & Kilner took up their tools and paint brushes to transform a tired and underused park and play area for local residents in Elswick. The ‘Elswick Triangle’ as it is known is a small community park just off Westgate Road which encompasses sitting areas, walkways, plant beds and a play area. The local residents have been campaigning for some time for the park to be regenerated and improved. The organisers of Give & Gain Day agreed with the local residents’ sentiments and asked Hay & Kilner to undertake some gentle ‘sprucing’ to improve the site and the views from the surrounding houses.

Hay & Kilner’s team of volunteers worked throughout the day, taming and maintaining over-grown grassed areas, turning over planting beds, removing old fence posts, painting flaking and neglected railings and park benches and general tidying the play area. By the end of their 7-hour effort, the team had significantly improved the appearance and ambience of the area, hopefully encouraging and allowing the local community of Elswick to enjoy and regularly use this well-situated out-door space.

Lucy Gray, Give and Gain Day Team Leader and Commercial Disputes solicitor at Hay & Kilner commented:

“Everyone in the Hay & Kilner team really got stuck into the tasks. It was very hard work but we all felt we had achieved a great deal by the end of the day. We received some wonderful comments from passing local residents who were very pleased with the progress. One lady in particular was very keen to assist our efforts and so was promptly given a paint brush and encouraged to join in! We all thoroughly enjoyed the day and working with the community. Hopefully our work will allow the residents of the Elswick Triangle and the surrounding area to enjoy the Summer in a pleasant and renewed park and play area.”

Give & Gain Day, organised by Business in the Community and Groundwork UK, is dedicated to getting thousands of employees out of the workplace to volunteer their time in their local community. The Hay & Kilner team were amongst 200 employees from other businesses across Newcastle who took part in Give and Gain Day.

Clare Thompson, Partner at Hay & Kilner commented:

“As a firm, we are proud of our North East roots and committed to giving something back to the local community through charitable support. The tremendous work and effort from our team for Give and Gain day is evidence of that. This is the second year we have taken part and we look forward to taking part again next year. I am sure that the work undertaken by the Hay & Kilner team will make a great difference to the local community of Elswick.”
