Newcastle institution The Hustler returns to city centre after securing new Haymarket home

Longstanding Newcastle pool and snooker venue The Hustler Pool and Snooker Club is set to return to the city centre, with Hay & Kilner advising the family-run business on its move to new premises at Haymarket.

The move follows The Hustler’s exit from its former premises at Hadrian House, where it had been based since 2012, as part of wider plans for the redevelopment of the site.

Hay & Kilner’s Commercial Property Team advised The Hustler on the surrender of its existing lease, with Senior Associate Amandeep Dhillon supporting negotiations to put the business in a position to secure new premises.

Partner John Morgan subsequently advised The Hustler on its new lease of the former Labour Club premises at 1-3 Haymarket from Hanro, represented by Adam Heather of Womble Bond Dickinson.

The new venue brings The Hustler back close to its original home on Northumberland Street, where the business traded for around 20 years before relocating to Hadrian House.

Established almost 50 years ago, The Hustler is a family-run business, with Mark and Jo Sewell continuing the business established by Mark’s parents.

John Morgan said: “The Hustler is a real Newcastle institution, and we’re delighted to have played a part in helping Mark and Jo secure a new home for the business in the city centre.

“The search for suitable premises has been a long one, and securing the right location was particularly important given The Hustler’s longstanding connection with Newcastle and its loyal customer base.

“As Hay & Kilner celebrates its 80th year, it’s particularly rewarding to support another longstanding local business as it enters its next chapter. We’re very pleased to have helped Mark and Jo navigate what was undoubtedly a challenging process and look forward to seeing the new venue open and thriving.”

Mark Sewell, owner of The Hustler Pool and Snooker Club, said: “Our new venue really does feel like we are coming home. We were originally based on Northumberland Street, so after 50 years of trading in Newcastle city centre, we couldn’t see Newcastle without The Hustler being part of it.

“We jumped at the chance to reopen at Haymarket and are really excited about what the future holds. We have a fantastic and loyal customer base who feel safe in our club and enjoy the community spirit we have built over the years.

“Our aim is to create that same welcoming and friendly atmosphere in our new venue and we’re delighted to know that The Hustler will be here in Newcastle for the next 20 years.

“We wouldn’t have been able to make this happen without the great work of John, Amandeep and the team at Hay & Kilner. They supported us through a very difficult and stressful time during the surrender of our previous lease and then through to completion of our new lease.

“We’re incredibly grateful for their advice and support throughout the process and always felt that we were in safe hands.”

The Hustler hopes to reopen sometime in November.
